When in Rome
Saturday, July 2nd, 2011When visiting someplace I don’t live I always try to be mindful of the fact that I don’t live there and should avoid disturbing the day to day.
You don’t have to be visisting some lost tribe to make an effort to pay attention to local culture and customs. Are people driving really slow and braking every time they see an oncoming car? If you’ve got a string of angry drivers behind you chances are you are not in touch with your surroundings.
Small town life in some areas is still riddled with corruption which results in poor urban planning with underdeveloped road systems for the population in the area. Most people leave the city in part because they are tired of fighting traffic, they didn’t make the sacrifice of city convenience to drive only sixteen miles in an hour. So while you might be a jerk there’s a chance that group of road ragers behind you really wants to have a revolution against their local government and not just run you off the road.
The same powers of observation should be used to keep an eye on your children’s behavior. Are the local kids sitting in the road at two a.m.? Are they running around screaming at that time? No, so neither should yours.
Keep these simple points in mind and everybody has a better weekend.
